Use full-to-full tank cycles for supported MPG

A supported cycle begins and ends with documented full fills for the same vehicle. Distance comes from valid odometer boundaries; gallons include the fuel consumed between those boundaries under the chosen convention.

  • Valid opening and closing odometers
  • Known full-fill status
  • Consistent fuel volume units

Hold partial fills until a closing boundary exists

Partial fills can contribute gallons inside a later supported cycle, but they do not close a cycle by themselves. A final full fill with no later boundary remains an exception.

  • Keep every consumed fuel event
  • Show the boundary transaction IDs
  • Do not invent a closing odometer

Control mixed units and odometer quality

Convert liters, imperial gallons, kilometers, or meters only under an explicit rule. Reject impossible negative distance and flag resets, gaps, and manual-entry concerns.

  • Record the conversion factor
  • Route questionable odometers to review

Label period MPG as approximate

Miles divided by gallons in the same calendar period may span unmatched tank boundaries. It can help screen a fleet, but it is not the same evidence as a full-to-full cycle.

What if the last fill is full?

Without a later full fill and closing odometer, it is an opening boundary for a future cycle, not a completed cycle.
